Amtrak has used a variety of liveries on its rolling stock since taking over intercity passenger rail service in the United States in A series of six schemes termed Phasesfirst introduced inhave seen the widest use.
Phases primarily use geometric arrangements of red, white, and blue—the national colors of the United States —part of Amtrak's patriotic visual identity. Amtrak began operations in May with a mixture of equipment still painted in the distinct liveries of the freight railroads that relinquished their passenger service to Amtrak. Amtrak picked and chose equipment that it determined to be in the best condition, and elected not to keep the same rolling stock on the same routes.
Since prior to Amtrak's operation one almost never found rolling stock from anywhere in the country on any train, let alone rolling stock from competing railroads mixed together on the same train, that period was later known as the Rainbow Era. To build the brand of Amtrak as a unified passenger railroad, the rolling stock was gradually repainted into system-wide Phases starting around with Phase I.
The Phases are sequentially numbered using Roman numerals. Phases were painted on all rolling stock, with locomotives and passenger cars often painted in different styles of the same Phase. Most current locomotives use the introduced Phase V, while passenger cars use the introduced Phase VI.
A modified Phase III scheme was introduced for some equipment in Non-revenue equipment uses bright lime green or a variation of Phase V. The three routes under the Amtrak California branch—the Capitol CorridorPacific Surflinerand San Joaquin —use equipment painted in several custom schemes, as do the Cascades and Piedmont. Amtrak has repainted equipment in unique livery for special uses, including its 40th anniversary in and to promote the Operation Lifesaver safety campaign.
Equipment has also been wrapped for advertising promotions. When testing equipment from other railroads, Amtrak has mostly kept existing livery, though some longer-term tests used Phase schemes. When Amtrak took over intercity passenger rail service on May 1,it inherited a collection of rolling stock from twenty different railroadseach with its own distinct colors and logos.
This "Rainbow Era" was short-lived; Amtrak began purchasing some of the leased equipment in mid, setting the stage for wholesale repainting from to Introduced inPhase I was the first paint scheme to be implemented system-wide on Amtrak's trains.
Locomotives were painted a light gray "Platinum Mist" with a black roof, the Amtrak "Pointless Arrow" chevron logo on the side, and a red nose which led to a "Bloody Nose" nickname.
Most passenger cars were essentially unchanged from Phase I, except for the removal of the chevron logo; new Sightseer lounges had a higher stripe with an angled transition on each end.
Phase III, introduced inis still used on some equipment. On both passenger cars and locomotives, the outer white pinstripes were removed while the inner stripe was widened, resulting in red, white, and blue stripes of equal width. Turboliners and the LRC test train were painted in white, with the stripes at the bottom of the train.
Several types of locomotives that were acquired later were given variations on Phase III. AEM-7 locomotives had the blue stripe expanded to cover the entire lower part of the body. Beginning inPhase IV was introduced as a striking departure from the traditional red, white, and blue style seen previously. Brought into service with the delivery of the newer Superliner II cars, Phase IV has two thin red stripes and a thick dark blue stripe.
NPCU in Phase V was introduced with the arrival of the Acela Express high-speed train sets in and is used on most locomotives. The Amtrak "Travelmark" logo is painted near the front or rear of the unit. Acela Express trainsets have grey and stainless steel bodies with the lower red stripe, with the wavy blue roof and Acela logo on the power cars only.
The Acela passenger cars have no blue stripe; colored blobs called "mobiles" are used to indicate the type of car Business ClassCafe Bistro, or First Class. Amfleet coaches for these trains received "Capstone" livery, which had a window stripe with various patterns of blue, light blue, and green to indicate the type of service.Smite ranked rewards
The red reflective sill stripe and mid-tone blue on Phase V are used. Single-level cars have white logos within the blue stripe, while Superliners have blue logos below the stripes. Pacific Parlour passenger car in Five state-funded corridor routes —the CascadesCapitol CorridorPacific SurflinerPiedmontand San Joaquin —are operated by Amtrak using equipment that is largely owned by the states in which they operate, and painted in custom schemes that deviate from the national Amtrak livery.
Several other route-specific paint schemes have been used in the past. The Genesis series of locomotives was designed by General Electric in response to a specification published by Amtrak and ultimately selected over a competing design presented by Electro-Motive Diesel EMD.
The Genesis series are the lowest North American diesel-electric locomotives. This height restriction allows the locomotive to travel easily through low-profile tunnels in the Northeast Corridor. However, this makes it more costly and time-consuming to maintain and repair. InAmtrak started installing bolt-on nose cones on its units for easy replacement in the event of a grade crossing collision with a vehicle. The Genesis unit is a fully computerized locomotive which automatically controls all on-board functions, thus producing high reliability while keeping the maintenance requirements low.
For example, its computers can automatically reduce the power plant's output in the event that the locomotive is overheating, or suffering from low oil pressure, low water pressure, or reduced airflow into the intakes, thus making it still operable. The P40DC and P42DC power plants can supply hertz head-end power either from the HEP alternator with the engine speed-locked to rpm normal mode or from the traction alternator with the engine speed-locked to rpm standby mode.
In the latter case, traction power is unavailable. The P32AC-DM powerplant does not have to be locked at a certain rpm because it utilizes an HEP inverter, which allows the prime mover to run at rpm when providing both traction power and HEP, and to idle at rpm or notch three while still providing HEP for lighting and air-conditioning when not providing traction power.
The trucks of Genesis locomotives were made by Krupp Verkehrstechnik, which has since been absorbed by Siemens Mobility ; the trucks on the newest Genesis locomotives carry the Siemens name.
A feature unique to the P40DC and P32AC-DM is a hostler stand at the rear of the locomotive providing increased visibility and reversing capabilities to the engineer while conducting reverse operations. Two unique features to the original P40DC are the two strobes above the cab and an emergency flasher between the strobes.
When they were overhauled, those features were removed. Three units were wrecked in the Big Bayou Canot train wreck and and in the Bourbonnais, Illinois, train crash and scrapped. The remaining 29 units were placed out-of-service for many years. Amtrak has returned 15 of their P40DC units to service as part of a project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of They also received updated cab signaling systems.
The upgraded locomotives still have mechanical air brakeswhich makes them most suitable for trains that only require a single locomotive. Tractive effort is rated at P42DCs are used primarily on most of Amtrak 's long-haul and higher-speed rail service outside the Northeast Corridor.
They will be replaced on long-distance service but not shorter routes by 75 Siemens Charger ALC locomotives, which will be delivered between and They can operate on power generated either by the on-board diesel prime mover or power collected from a third rail electrification system at volts direct current.
The model is only used on services operating north from New York Citywhere diesel emissions through its two fully enclosed main terminal stations are prohibited.B2 size photo
The third-rail shoes are used on the over-running third-rail into Penn Station for Amtrak units and the under-running third-rail into Grand Central Terminal for Metro-North. All P32AC-DM models, unlike the P40DC and P42DC models, lack the door on the rear of the locomotive that would normally lead to the next car, making it impossible to access the locomotive from either a coach or a trailing engine.E1b1a ramses
Another unique feature is that the two lower vents near the back of the locomotive are bigger than that of the P40s and P42s. Additionally, Metro-North's P32AC-DM units feature an emergency exit hatch in the front, due to tight clearances in the Park Avenue tunnel which make evacuating the engine crew via the side doors impossible.

Its electric locomotives are confined to the Northeast Corridor and the Philadelphia to Harrisburg Main Linewhile its diesels may be found anywhere in the United States. Of the 32 base engines, 21 would be allocated for Illinois and Michigan service, 6 would be for Amtrak California service and the remaining 5 being used on the Cascades service in Washington.
The contract includes options for up to 75 additional engines for use on intercity corridor and commuter routes, and up to engines for use on long distance routes for a total of engines. The long distance engines would differ mainly in the following ways: larger fuel tank 2, gallons vs. On December 21,Amtrak ordered an additional 75 Chargers to replace older Genesis locomotives on long-distance services.
The first of these locomotives will enter service inwith the order completed in On January 17,Amtrak announced that it has entered collaboration with the California High-Speed Rail Authority to draft up specifications for the standard high speed train set to be used along the Northeast Corridor and replace the original Acela train sets.
The joint order was planned to be for 62 trainsets, with 32 earmarked for the NEC, and having a capacity between people. In AugustAmtrak approved the contract with Alstom to make 28 new Avelia Liberty train sets to replace the Acela on the Northeast Corridor with delivery by The new trainsets will have more passenger seating and improved interior amenities as compared to the current Acela equipment.
Two additional Talgo 8 trainsets were bought for use in Wisconsin but never operated. After the Washington train derailmentAmtrak sought to lease the trainsets for the Cascades.
At the end of Amtrak rostered 1, passenger cars of various types. In addition to its regular fleet, Amtrak owns several business and track geometry cars: . In Novembera joint venture led by Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo was awarded a contract by the California Department of Transportation Caltrans to build bi-level passengers cars for Midwestern and California service.
Delivery is slated for —, with construction expected to begin within Although not part of its fleet, private railroad cars may also be hauled by Amtrak trains if suitably certified and equipped with head end power HEP. These private cars may be used by their owners or chartered by individuals for private travel behind scheduled Amtrak trains.
All non-Amtrak cars, including those of the Department of Transportationreceive car numbers in the series for tracking purposes.Breakpoint forums
This is a partial listing of locomotives and rolling stock formerly operated by Amtrak. This does not include equipment inherited from private railroads. Amtrak inherited numerous locomotives from private railroads on its formation in Most of these were retired by the end of the decade, if not earlier. These locomotives are enumerated below, with their original owners. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikimedia list article. Retrieved GE was ultimately awarded the contract to build an initial 64 diesel units and 10 dual-mode locomotives.React architecture patterns
GE partnered with Krupp for the design of the lightweight bodyshell, however the final design wasn't able to be determined on time; GE would ultimately build 20 fewer units of the new design, and instead build 20 3,hp units based on their existing line of four-axle Dash-8 freight locomotives. These locomotives are the PWH units, and are currently in service as switchers and backup units. The final design was revealed inas the "Genesis. The remainder are still in storage, with Phase IV colors.
Later on that year, the final variant was introduced; Amtrak requested an order for diesel-powered units, but faster and more powerful than the P40DC. Manhattan via legacy subway tunnels. A disadvantage of the monocoque body is costlier repairs after minor crossing collisions, resulting in BoltOn NoseCones being installed on most units. The conversion work from hp to hp was done by readjusting a lay shaft in the prime mover.
Amtrak later rebuilt 15 of its P40DCs like NJ Transit did along with a re-gearing of the motors for mph service at Beech Groove shops as part of a project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of They are now essentially P42DC units. All 15 units that have been rebuilt have been returned to service. The only difference between these locomotives and actual P42DCs are that the upgraded P40DCs still feature mechanical air brakes, which make them suitable for trains requiring one locomotive, unlike the P42DCs and P32AC-DMs which have electronic brakes instead.Krav maga vs boxing
